In a remarkable achievement for neonatal care, the Department of Pediatrics at Government Medical College Doda successfully managed and discharged a newborn weighing 6 kilograms. This incident marks one of the heaviest babies ever delivered at the institution.
The baby, born on 25th October 2025 at precisely 1:20 PM, arrived to a diabetic mother. Within 30 minutes of birth, the infant faced severe respiratory distress. Medical staff recognized the urgency of the situation and swiftly admitted the newborn to the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU) for advanced treatment and close monitoring.
Given the baby’s large-for-gestational-age status and respiratory issues, specialized neonatal respiratory support was immediately administered. Medical professionals monitored vital parameters, including respiratory effort, oxygen saturation, blood sugar levels, temperature, and neurological activity. During the following days, the infant showed positive responses, allowing for the gradual reduction of respiratory assistance.
In the 72 hours leading up to discharge, the baby exhibited stable independent breathing along with normal oxygenation and temperature control. There were no incidents of apnea, cyanosis, or desaturation recorded. Following this period of sustained clinical stability, healthcare providers discharged the newborn in good health, with routine follow-up care recommended.
This challenging case was managed under the expert guidance of HOD Pediatrics Dr. Najmus Saqib, along with the dedicated support of faculty members Dr. Narinder Singh, Dr. Ghansham Singh Katoch, Dr. Niraj K. Gupta, and Dr. Satish Sharma. A committed team of senior and junior residents played a crucial role in the successful outcome.
Particular thanks went to the nursing and paramedical staff at GMC Doda, whose vigilant monitoring and compassionate care proved critical to the baby’s recovery. The team’s dedication ensured the highest standards of care for the newborn.
This success story underscores the growing expertise in neonatal care within the Department of Pediatrics at GMC Doda. It highlights their ongoing commitment to providing quality, evidence-based, and compassionate healthcare services to newborns and children in the region.
