J&K Sports Minister Seeks Support for Youth Development Initiatives

Minister for Youth Services and Sports, Satish Sharma, initiated discussions with Union Minister for Youth Affairs and Sports, Dr. Mansukh Mandaviya, on October 3, 2023, in New Delhi. They focused on enhancing sports infrastructure and youth development strategies in Jammu and Kashmir.

During this significant meeting, Sharma highlighted the J&K Government’s commitment to transforming the Union Territory into a vibrant hub for sports and youth empowerment. He presented a comprehensive memorandum outlining critical proposals aimed at improving sports facilities and athlete welfare.

The memorandum emphasized infrastructure development, athlete welfare, and grassroots participation aligned with both the National Sports Policy 2025 and the J&K Sports Policy 2022. Sharma advocated for urgent Union Government assistance to accelerate the establishment of world-class sports facilities.

Key to his proposals were the establishment of the National Winter Sports Centre of Excellence at Gulmarg, the modernization of district stadiums to include all-weather infrastructure, and the creation of accessible sports amenities at the panchayat level for rural youth.

Sharma specifically called for the expansion of Khelo India grassroots programs and increased scholarship support for athletes. He underscored the necessity to integrate sports science and physiotherapy into the training systems for better performance outcomes.

Another significant focus was the promotion of public-private partnerships (PPP), aiming to enhance the management and sustainability of sports infrastructure in Jammu and Kashmir.

To bolster sports-linked tourism and global exposure, Sharma proposed hosting international winter sports events in Gulmarg, aiming to cement Jammu & Kashmir’s reputation as a premier destination for winter and adventure sports.

Furthermore, Sharma requested the swift release of ₹103.82 crore under the Khelo India scheme, essential for completing critical sports infrastructure projects. The funding will significantly aid in developing sports facilities crucial to nurturing talent in the region.

In response, Union Minister Dr. Mansukh Mandaviya reassured that a dedicated policy for promoting rural sports would be soon framed. He acknowledged the necessity of providing funds for sports equipment to support ongoing initiatives and the vision for comprehensive sports development in Jammu and Kashmir.

As these discussions unfold, the focus remains clear: amplifying the sports infrastructure in Jammu and Kashmir is essential not only for youth development but also for positioning the region as a key player in the national sports landscape.
