Chief Minister Omar Abdullah has sanctioned ₹30.14 crore for welfare schemes benefiting registered construction workers in Jammu and Kashmir. This funding aims to provide direct support through online transfers to eligible beneficiaries, enhancing the welfare network for workers.
In his capacity as Chairman of the J&K Building & Other Construction Workers’ Welfare Board (JKBOCWWB), Abdullah made this significant announcement. Officials communicated that the sanctioned funds would be processed through Assistant Labour Commissioners, ensuring immediate deposits into the bank accounts of registered construction workers.
The allocation includes vital programs such as education support, disability assistance, aid for chronic illnesses, support for the kin of deceased workers, marriage assistance, and meritorious awards for children of registered workers. These welfare schemes reflect a commitment to the well-being of construction workers, a demographic often underserved.
In a previous JKBOCWWB meeting held in July, Abdullah emphasized the importance of redefining what constitutes a ‘construction worker’ to encompass more individuals within the unorganised sector. This redefinition seeks to broaden access to welfare measures, ensuring that all vulnerable labourers benefit.
“Construction workers are the backbone of our infrastructure development and deserve comprehensive and timely support,” Abdullah stated, underlining the government’s dedication to enhancing labor rights and dignity.
The Chief Minister also highlighted ongoing efforts to develop innovative policies that maximize coverage and secure financial stability for workers, all in alignment with national best practices for labour welfare.
In a related matter, Abdullah extended his condolences to the families affected by a horrific bus accident in Medina, Saudi Arabia, which involved Indian Umrah pilgrims on their way from Mecca. The tragedy occurred early this morning.
The accident resulted in the death of 45 pilgrims, with only one survivor who sustained severe injuries. The incident has left many families grappling with profound grief.
Upon learning of the crash, Abdullah expressed his sorrow and solidarity with the bereaved families. “I am deeply saddened by this tragic event and extend my heartfelt prayers to the families who have lost their loved ones and wish a speedy recovery for the injured,” the Chief Minister remarked.
Preliminary reports indicate that the bus was carrying 46 Indian pilgrims when it collided with a tanker. Witnesses described the scene as devastating, with many questioning the circumstances surrounding the accident.
Ongoing investigations will undoubtedly seek to clarify these circumstances and ensure that such tragedies do not recur. Abdullah’s dual focus on enhancing labour welfare and supporting families affected by tragedies illustrates a commitment to both progressive policies and compassionate governance.
