Pak Court to Hear Jailed Ex-PM Imran Khan’s Plea in Al-Qadir Case

A Pakistani high court will review a plea from jailed former prime minister Imran Khan and his wife, Bushra Bibi, on Thursday. They challenge their sentences linked to the controversial Al-Qadir Trust case, which has stirred considerable public interest and political debate.

In January 2023, an accountability court in Islamabad sentenced 73-year-old Khan to 14 years in prison and Bibi to seven years on corruption charges. These convictions came from an investigation led by the National Accountability Bureau (NAB), Pakistan’s anti-corruption watchdog.

The Islamabad High Court (IHC) was initially set to hear their plea on April 22. However, the session was cancelled due to the closure of the capital’s Red Zone amidst anticipated Iran-US negotiations.

According to the registrar’s office, a division bench, including Chief Justice Sarfraz Dogar and Justice Mohammad Asif, will now take up this matter on Thursday. This hearing marks a significant moment in an ongoing saga involving high-profile political figures.

The case revolves around allegations tied to the Al-Qadir Trust, a welfare organization operating a university near Islamabad. The NAB asserts that the trust served as a facade to illegally acquire land worth millions from a real estate mogul.

Documents reveal that the businessman allegedly made large donations to the trust in exchange for the former government using repatriated funds from the UK to settle his debts, rather than placing this money into the national treasury.

Notably, Khan has consistently denied any wrongdoing. He claims that he and his wife did not receive any personal financial benefit from the trust or the transactions in question. This assertion appears crucial as public sentiment remains divided regarding the implications of the case.

Analysts speculate that the outcomes of this case could have far-reaching effects on Khan’s political career and the Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) party’s future. As the nation anticipates developments, the hearing could become a pivotal point in the ongoing political turmoil.

The upcoming court session will likely draw significant media coverage and public interest, given Khan’s status as a former prime minister and the controversies that have enveloped his governance.
