Srinagar, the summer capital of Jammu and Kashmir, shivered in the cold as temperatures plummeted to -2.1°C last night, marking the coldest night of the season, as confirmed by the MeT Department.
According to the MeT data, Pahalgam registered a chilling -3.8°C, making it the coldest location in the Kashmir Valley. This drop in mercury signals a significant shift towards harsh winter conditions expected in the region.
The Director of the Meteorological Department, Dr. Mukhtar Ahmad, stated that there is no forecast of wet spells for the next week. He noted that night temperatures are likely to remain steady until November 17, with a slight improvement anticipated for two to three days thereafter.
As temperatures sink below freezing, Srinagar and surrounding areas encounter frost formation during early morning hours, a telltale sign of the impending winter chill.
The cold weather has prompted residents to prepare for the harsh conditions ahead, with many bringing out warm clothing and heating appliances. The combination of low temperatures and potential for snow means that winter is settling in across the region.
Experts warn that residents should brace for even colder nights in the weeks to come. Staying informed about weather changes is essential for safety, especially for vulnerable groups such as the elderly and children.
With the Kashmir Valley facing these brutal temperatures, it’s crucial for local authorities to ensure adequate preparations and support systems are in place for the community.
